Top tips for

Flying

Kitzbuhel is located close to three major cities (Salzburg, Innsbruck and Munich), making it easily accessible. Salzburg International is the closest airport to Kitzbuhel; from here there are regular transfers into the city. Numerous trains and buses go direct from these cities to Kitzbuhel.

One of the things to look out for is that quite often, the cheaper the airline, the more complicated and expensive their baggage policy is. This can make carrying skis or snowboards to your destination costly if you are not prepared.

Trains

Trains are an easy and an eco-friendly way of travelling down to the Alps. The European rail network is efficient, affordable and comfortable, and there are train connections all the way from London to Kitzbuhel. The Eurostar leaves Waterloo station daily for Paris; from gare de l'Est in the French capital, you can take an overnight train to Munich. Regular Eurocity trains travel from Munich to Innsbruck. From here, several trains daily make the one-hour trip to Kitzbuhel. The Austrian Railways offer frequent services to Kitzbuhel, and all the fast trains stop at Kitzbuhel's main staion.

Transfers

Bus transfers are the most economical way to travel to resort from the airport or train station. If possible, try to book your tickets well in advance - the buses can get very busy and some companies act on a reservation-only basis.

A flexible option is to fly to Salzburg or Innsbruck and hire a car to complete the journey to Kitzbuhel. From Innsbruck, take the A12 motorway east, as far as the junction with Route 312 heading to Ellmau. After bypassing Ellmau, continue east to the junction with Route 342. Take Route 342 south to Kitzbuhel. From Salzburg, take the E-60, B-312 and B-161 motorways to access the resort. (Be aware you are required by law to carry snow chains).

For door-to-door, taxis are a good option, although not the cheapest.

Self-drive

Kitzbuhel is located just over 1,100kms (about a day's drive) from Calais, along high-quality motorways. The motorways are the quickest route but you will have to pay around €50-60 in toll charges each way.

To help with driving routes, check out www.rac.co.uk or www.drivingabroad.co.uk for directions and tips. Before you go, check with your car insurers that you will be covered for your time in Europe. Also remember to carry a warning triangle, spare light bulbs, flashlight and a first aid box. Also recommended are spare fuses and a fan belt. And don't forget the snow chains!
