Chamonix's proximity to Geneva is both a strength and weakness. On one hand, the town is perfect for ski weekends and short breaks. Within fifty minutes' drive from the airport, in theory (depending on the punctuality of your airline) you could be on the slopes for lunchtime after an early morning flight from the UK. On the downside, the easy access can mean that in high season and at weekends, the traffic and capacity reaches fever pitch. Jostling for lifts, parking spaces and beds is a necessity but one, which we feel, is well worth the effort.|

The easiest route to Chamonix is to fly into Geneva (the closest airport) and then travel by road to the resort. The next biggest airport is Turin - reached through the Mont Blanc tunnel, or Lyon St Exupery.
If you choose to book with a budget airline, just check their baggage policy - especially for carrying skis and snowboards.
The nearest TGV stop to Chamonix is in Annecy so although it is possible to get the train from the UK to Chamonix, the last bit can involve several changes unless you get a transfer. If you'd prefer to take the train, Seat 61 has all the information you could need to plan your journey.
If you use a bus transfer, try to book your tickets well in advance - the buses can get very busy and some companies act on a reservation-only basis. SAT bus runs regular transfers from Geneva.
For the quickest and most hassle-free way of travelling to Chamonix, take a private transfer from a company such as Cham Express or Mountain drop-offs.
For door-to-door, taxis are a good idea although not always the cheapest option.
Car-hire / Self-drive
The upside of having a car in Chamonix means you can drive to your ski area of choice instead of taking the often-crowded buses.
Driving to the resort from the UK will take you about 12 hours once you reach Calais or Boulogne. The motorways are the quickest route but you will have to pay around €50-60 in toll charges each way.
Before you go, check with your car insurers that you will be covered for your time in Europe. Carry a warning triangle, spare light bulbs, flash light and a first aid box. You are required by law to carry snow chains.
