As with all ski resorts these days there are plenty of places for pizza and pasta but there are also lots of restaurants which specialise in traditional Savoyard fare; tartiflette (potatoes with reblochon cheese, and ham or bacon), fondue, pierrade and plates of meat and cheese. Not good for those watching their cholesterol but extremely satisfying after a hard day on the slopes.
Five to try:
La Jalouvre:
A friendly restaurant which does not serve tartiflette! One of our favourites.
La Ferme de Lormay:
Fantastic food - the best rib of beef we have ever had.
La Bournerie:
Lovely old building, serving good French mountain cooking. Also open in the evening.
The Green Monkey:
The best bar in Chinaillon.
Le Baron Noire:
This bar/restaurant/discotheque is the place for all night partying.
Our penny's worth
There is a real treat to be had in Le Grand Bornand for meat-lovers, but unfortunately the French haven't quite grasped the concept of vegetarianism as well as other places. Be prepared for a cheese-filled week if you are vegetarian, but if you do look hard enough, you can find some good vegetarian dishes.
