Mad Dog Ski: Ski Resort guidebooks for Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland

On the piste - Megeve - France

Megeve tourist officeWith excellent tree-lined skiing and 325km of slopes to play with, there is easily enough to satisfy different abilities, although snowboarders may struggle with the abundance of drag lifts. Megeve is set rather low at just 1100m, and the local slopes can suffer early and late season. However, the skiing is on pastureland rather than rocky mountainous terrain, so the resort doesn't need much snow cover for skiing. There's usually decent skiing on the higher slopes during the winter. In addition, if you have a car, Megeve is the most pleasant base from which to enjoy the 13 resorts (including Chamonix and Argentiere) and 121 lifts covered by the Evasion Mont Blanc lift pass.

Our favourite runs

Beginners:
If you’re starting out or just building up your confidence, try the beginner slopes at valley level, or the more snow sure ones at altitude on the main mountains.

Intermediates:
Check out the shady north-east facing slopes on the back of Mont d’Arbois and Mont Joux and the front of Rochebrune.

Advanced:
There are some steeper runs and plenty of off-piste opportunities on Mont Joly and Cote 2000, where you can still find untouched powder two days after it has fallen.

Off-piste:
This is the main attraction in Megeve. On Mont Joly and Mont Joux sections, the slightly lower Epaule chair has access to some good-off piste, down to St-Nicholas.
