Mad Dog Ski: Ski Resort guidebooks for Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland

Food and drink - Meribel - France

Meribel has a huge variety of places to eat with something to suit every budget. It may not have the Michelin-starred restaurants of nearby Courchevel but the prices certainly tend to be more affordable. And with a choice ranging from English and French to Mexican and Asian, you should manage to avoid the usual fondue/cheese overload so common on skiing holidays in France. The Three Valleys also has plenty of mountain restaurants for the skier who likes to 'lunch'. Almost all the restaurants have stunning views, so even if we don't recommend them for food, they can be good places to have a morning or afternoon break.

Five to try

Chez From'ton:
Cosy cellar restaurant specialising in cheese - an excellent place to enjoy your fondue.

Le Refuge:
The dark wood and red decor make this family-run restaurant feel immediately welcoming. Downstairs the menu is straightforward (pizzas, pasta, roast chicken) while upstairs is more fancy.

Adray Telebar:
A much-loved mountain restaurant convenient for both skiers and non-skiers. The portions are generous and the menu varied.

Le Rond Point:
The apres-ski experience here is legendary with live music and a vibrant atmosphere.

Le Saint Amour:
This small hideaway of a wine bar sells exceptional wine by the glass, or bottle if you prefer, and has an intimate ambiance.

Our penny’s worth

If you’re not sure what you want after a days skiing, try something different each day - there are cosy mountain lodges serving a final vin chaud before the last run home, packed bars where you can share a pitcher of beer and listen to a band, coolly sophisticated champagne houses and tiny hidden away bars.
