The quaint town of Morzine provides a perfect setting for a ski holiday for visitors of all abilities, due to its location at the heart of the world’s largest interlinked ski area – Les Portes du Soleil. The local slopes between Morzine and Les Gets provide tree-lined runs with chocolate-box scenery and beginners will improve quickly due to the many nursery areas on the plateau. A local pass gives access to over 150km of piste and many people never need to venture any further during a one week holiday.
A full area pass is in a different league and opens up 13 resorts on either side of the Franco-Swiss border, with skiing ranging from the childrens' gardens to the steepest marked piste in Europe and almost endless off-piste. Many season workers have admitted failing to ski it all in a 5 month winter, so there should be enough to keep you coming back year after year!
Our favourite runs
Beginners:
The pistes of
Bruyeres and
Gentiane, leading to Les Gets, are exceptionally wide and well-groomed.
Intermediates:
Arbis, a lengthy and technical run from the top of Chamossiere, should not be missed.
Advanced:
Le Chavanette (the 'Swiss Wall') between Avoriaz and Les Crosets - the steepest piste - and surely one of the most impressive border crossings in Europe.
Off-piste:If you have a local area pass, you should consider the wide, open bowl to the left of the Chamossiere chairlift, which can be breathtaking in the right conditions.
