Mad Dog Ski: Ski Resort guidebooks for Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland

Meribel - France

Meribel's reputation precedes it - the pretty resort in the middle of the Three Valleys where Brits love to party. Wooden chalets, fantastic skiing, sunny slopes, lively and varied apres-ski... people fall in love with this place; it attracts a warm loyalty from visitors who return season after season.

Chalets in MeribelThe resort lies in the Les Allues valley and is made up of a number of hamlets and villages. The four main ones - Meribel, Mottaret, Meribel-Village and Les Allues - range in height from 1750m (Mottaret) to 1100m (Les Allues). See the Where to stay section for more detail on each village.

Although Meribel itself is home to the more sophisticated nightlife and restaurants you will find a reasonable choice of food and bars in all the villages. Everywhere (and Mottaret excels in this) has at least some ski-in, ski-out accommodation but you would be wise to check how difficult the access slopes are before you book.

Our penny’s worth

For a cheaper option, consider staying in Mottaret, which is situated slightly further up from Meribel, right next to the lifts. However, if you’re seeking the vibrant nightlife, it is more convenient to stay right in the centre of Meribel to save a long walk home after a long night partying in Dick’s Tea Bar.

Don’t leave Meribel without…

  • Going ice-skating in the Olympic Centre
  • Having a mouth watering steak at Chez Kiki
  • Hitting apres-ski at Rond Point and sampling the famous toffee vodka
  • Heading off-piste on the north-facing run access from the 3 Vallees chair at Val Thorens
  • Staying at the 19th century converted farmhouse chalet courtesy of Flexiski (if you can afford it!)
