Planning your ski weekend

Ideal weekend resorts

Flights

  • Peak holiday times and Saturdays or Sundays are bad times to travel - airport queues are horrendous, roads are clogged turning what should be a relaxing weekend into a stress-induced nightmare
  • Local airports may have limited flight choices but they do reduce your transfer times

Airport transfers

  • Hiring a car offers the most flexibility but make sure you ask for snow tyres and snow chains when making your reservation
  • Taxis and private transfers are the simplest method of transport but can be pricey

Relax and take the train

  • Train travel allows you to travel on a date and time that suits you and you can return when you want - so you can make a long or short weekend of it!
  • Prices are good  value and, unlike the airlines, there are no hidden extras (such as additional charges for your skis or snowboards).

Which resort?

  • Aim high, Resorts over 1500m with glaciers or good snowmaking facilities are the most snow sure...
  • ...but in bad weather, high exposed slopes may be closed so you'll need somewhere with sheltered tree-lines pistes just in case
