Skier level: good challenging intermediate slopes including some unpisted ski routes to build up off-piste confidence, fantastic off-piste. Less appealing to beginners/children although there are beginner slopes and Rendl mountain has several lovely blue runs.

Where to stay: There are numerous pensions in the village. Choose one in ‘Dorf' (around the centre) or Nasserein (the suburb adjoining the eastern end of the resort; still convenient for the slopes and centre. Details can be found at www.stantonamarlberg.com. Good mid-range hotels, including Aparthotel Anton right next to the main lift. Rates are reasonable, including good deals for single rooms. Skihotel Galzig is also convenient for the slopes.

Where to eat: Pizza Pomodoro - everything you'd expect from a great Italian kitchen where pizza dough and pasta are made on the premises.

Skier level: Intermediate runs make up most of the runs in the immediate ski area surrounding the resort although there are some great free riding opportunities on the glacier.

Where to stay: In the centre, try the Haus Alexander or a mid-range hotel. Nearby Ramsau (1200m), Pension Hoffelner offers excellent value and runs weekend/mid-week packages.

Where to eat: Just off the main pedestrian area, you'll find Marias Mexican, for classic Mexican food - meaty ribs, rump steak and the rest. The bar gets busy after 9pm so you might have to stand and eat, but the atmosphere is great and food is served until 2am.

Where to drink: It's got to be Siglu, which you can't miss. In true apres-ski style, this place only closes when the last person leaves. Try the local favourite Jagermeister and Red Bull for a real kick.

Known as an off-piste and ski touring mecca, Chamonix understandably attracts mainly expert and intermediate skiers. The beginner runs are few and segregated from other runs. The split-up nature of the ski area makes getting around and meeting up with other levels of skiers hard.

Where to stay: Book through Ski Solutions, stay in the 2-star Pointe Isabelle hotel from £380 for four nights including flights and transfer. The hotel is centrally located and near to a bus stop to take you to the slopes. Alternatively, Flexiski, have two chalets dedicated to weekend breaks in Chamonix.

Where to eat: Hameau Albert 1er Hotel - legendary restaurant - one definitely for special occasions. Their tasting menu costs from €112 but is worth every penny.

Where to drink: Jekyll Bar - refurbished a couple of years ago, this bar is a fun place to drink after the slopes. With Guiness and Murphys available as well as sport and live bands, it can get very busy with the English crowd.

Skier level: With access to the whole of the Portes du Soleil ski area, there is a huge amount of travelling that can be done. Intermediates probably have the most amount of pistes to play on with plenty of blues and reds. There are beginner slopes in the village as well as nearby with access vie a bus or gondola. Advanced skiers can also access some nearby off-piste and mogul runs.

Where to eat: En bas, the notorious downstairs bar of Pub Mont Fort, makes a surprisingly successful switch to a smart, new-world restaurant. Upstairs, the budget food is also good, though more of the sandwich and burger variety.

Where to drink: Le Farinet is a great place for apres-ski. A generous happy hour kick-starts the evening, and there are regular live bands. If that sounds too upbeat for you, settle into the leather sofas in the lounge bar.
